I’m sharing my stories because life is filled with unique, yet universal emotions: elation, passion, sadness, crazy-as-shit anger, etc. We’ve all done silly things throughout our quests to find love (or what we thought might be love). I’ve experienced so much joy and laughter hearing and reading dating stories (from friends and books) and I wanted to share my own stories. Please note these stories DO NOT reflect ALL Little People, ALL Asian women, etc. This is a collection of my stories throughout my life as Diane, a Japanese-Korean, heterosexual Little Person woman. While I may share SOME similar experiences with other people, please don’t generalize human beings based on things you read on the internet.
After years of making lots of mistakes, trying too hard and neglecting my own needs/wants, I’ve finally come to the realization that I don’t NEED a relationship anymore. If I find the love of my life, great! If I don’t, oh well! As lovely as relationships can be, it’s something beyond my control. The only thing I can do is find peace within myself and be open to the possibility of meeting good people along the way. While I miss cuddles and other nice things about dating, I no longer feel that pressing need to lock someone down for marriage. At the moment, my focus is on creating a life that satisfies me. I’ve spent all of my 20s searching for a partner in all of the wrong places and I’m choosing to invest my energy into other fulfilling elements like community service, creative endeavors and eating lots of garlic. Although self-improvement is a life-long process, I’m being extra intentional to make shifts to become a person I’m proud of and love.
In addition to having graduate school commitments and a desire to watch lots of Hulu, I think I’m also tired of filling my voids with people who also have no idea what they want in life. Once I feel settled in who I am, I think I’ll be ready. For the first time, I’m not afraid of “ending up alone”. There’s no formula on how to meet “The One”, but I think it tends to happen when the following equation is present: good timing + being in the right places + willingness to love and be loved = a good match. Until I’m ready to date again, I’m sharing my disaster stories as a tool to confront my past while developing self-awareness in hope to create a healthier pattern of relationships.
Why NinjaBuns?
In 2011, I joined match.com while living in Studio City, CA. Choosing a username for a dating site is awkward. While “ImNOTlikeOtherGirls_4692372392” or “BuyMeDinner323” tends to garner more interest, I opted for a more personal username. I originally wanted “NinjaBunny” because my last name is Kawasaki (Kawasaki Ninja motorcycle) and I like bunnies. Unfortunately, some guy took it. NinjaBuns was available and I personally enjoyed the silliness of deciphering what kind of buns would ninja-esque.
